The University of Western Ontario is tops again in Canada among large universities, according to the 2010 Globe and Mail Canadian University Report Card.
In it’s eighth year, the Canadian University Report, in partnership with The Strategic Counsel and Educational Policy Institute, surveyed just under 40,000 students to determine level of satisfaction with their school and student life. The Globe and Mail rated the performance of 56 universities.
Of the 19 categories published in a supplement in today’s Globe and Mail, Western earned 12 grades of A- or better; was alone in first in eight categories; and tied for first in three others.
Western also received two A+ grades (Recreation and Athletics, and Campus Atmosphere). In the large university category, the Globe and Mail handed out just four A+ grades, with McGill and Waterloo getting the other two A+ for academic reputation.
“We strive continuously to enhance the quality of learning here at Western,” says President Amit Chakma, “and we are committed to do everything we can to continue that mission.
Chakma pointed to the fact that Western has the second highest entering grades in Ontario.
“We are attracting great students to our university and providing them with the best experience at research intensive university is a top priority. I am grateful to all of those on campus who contribute to that experience.”
Canadian University Report Editor Simon Beck says Canada’s universities do a pretty good job.
“In fact, I’d say it’s tough to find a mediocre one anywhere in this vast nation; and the best of them provide an education comparable to the world’s elite institutions,” says Beck. “But that doesn’t mean they can’t do better.”
On the Globe and Mail’s website, the top five things students are saying about Western include:
- • Wide variety of courses and programs; “personalized” degrees
- • Some final-year undergrad courses can apply toward master’s
- • Approachable, involved instructors
- • Strong school spirit, community feel
- • Larger classes on main campus; smaller at three affiliated university colleges

Western sports, recreation and athletics best in Canada says
Globe, Maclean’s
Western’s intercollegiate athletics program named tops in Canada by Maclean’s, while sports and recreation receives nation’s only A+ rating from Globe and Mail’s university rankings
Andy Watson 11/25/2009 12:29:42 PM
LONDON, Ont. – The Department of Sports and Recreation Services at Western received positive third-party recognition of the value and success of their programs in 2009 over the past two months.
In the Globe and Mail’s annual University Report Card in October, Western’s athletics and recreation programs received the only A+ rating in the nation, thanks in part to the opening of the $34-million Western Student Recreation Centre and success of the varsity programs. Market-driven sports men’s hockey, men’s basketball and men’s football all reached the CIS Final Four in the 2008-09 varsity season, while 36 of Western’s 38 teams finished in the Top 5 in their provincial leagues.
The Western Mustangs were named the top intercollegiate athletics program in Canada in the annual Maclean’s University Rankings in November.
“We are very honoured to be recognized nationally for our overall success with intercollegiate athletics in Canada,” said Therese Quigley, Director of Sports and Recreation Services at Western. “There are so many great programs in the CIS. To be put at the top of them is truly a remarkable achievement.”
“As we approach our 100th year of intercollegiate competition, our teams continue to compete for provincial and national championships, and succeed in the classroom and in their careers after they graduate. We are so proud of the success of our student-athletes. It could not be possible without support from the university, our hard-working coaches, our staff and the gifted student-athletes who compete as Mustangs.”
